The US Navy has a permanent need for enhanced power solutions delivering longer runtime in lighter, smaller package at a lower cost than existing commercial power solutions. Remote sensors on ground or in the water are becoming part of the global warfare tools in defensive or offensive tactics. Under water sensors use is limited by the lifetime and size of the battery used in them.
FlexEl designed and delivered a battery/semi-fuel cell capable of producing the power required to operate a sensor and its radio beacon emitter. The solution is based on a metal – sea water technology that has been optimized to boost the current drain, and increase the energy density. This reserve battery remains inactive until it gets in contact with fresh or sea water, and has unlimited shelf life in storage.
The technology uses proven chemicals, parts and manufacturing techniques so that production scale-up is readily managed.
